Cooperative developments in Taos

I'm now at the TAUS Summit – appropriately in Taos, NM – working with an amazing group of localization professionals to address the question of whether an industry-wide language resource cooperative can be developed. Representing buyers, services providers and technology companies, the group is debating the benefits, risks, business impacts and framework of such a collective.
No small feat. On the one hand, everyone up and down the language supply chain could benefit from a massive repository of "good" data, for term reference, TM seeding and MT system training. Feasibility is the key issue. There's the intellectual property rights angle, data integrity, investment and the sheer effort involved in building a self-sustaining framework to manage it all in.
The meeting ends later today, but consensus so far seems to be that the benefits outweigh the obstacles. Data generated from this event will be used by TAUS to develop a business plan over the next few months, to be presented and reviewed at the next meeting. Implementation should be fun. Imagine industry competitors, suppliers and buyers all working toward the common goal of reducing prices, complexity and volumes. This is a healthy direction for the industry, demonstrating that we're capable of evolving and adapting to changing conditions.
