It Takes an Entire Supply Chain

I am traveling today, but caught the news that SDL acquired Tridion. From a technology standpoint I can see the potential wisdom, but it does make me wonder what others in the industry think. For some time now, in our conversations with LSP partners, technology partners and customers, it’s clear they are thrilled that the industry has started embracing a supply chain model (or ecosystem as SDL has called it), so I’m curious how they think this fits in.

Some in the industry have speculated for years that consolidation would ultimately unite best-of-breed technology into a single globalization content management system. Idiom has been part of that speculation too, but for several years now we’ve seen customers embracing the best-of-breed/open architecture approach that has created an environment where CMS vendors, LSP partners and others can co-exist and be profitable – and where customers can continue to use the ECM, SCM, database and other systems they already have in place.

We’re curious what others think about industry consolidation. We’ve seen some comments already, such as Tony Byrne’s here, and we will be watching discussions like these closely (also see Tony’s blog postings). Until today, we’ve seen our industry moving in the other direction – toward the ecosystem model – so we’d love your thoughts. I welcome your comments and insights on this – brabkin@idiominc.com. I’ll share what you have to say about this in a future post when I’m back in the office.
